After the
BJP government assumed power in May 2008, the state witnessed bypolls in 16 assembly segments. Of these, BJP had eight wins, the JD(S) six and the
Congress managed only two. Even in these two, the Congress won Govindarajnagar in Bangalore with JD(S) support.
The bypolls were necessitated due to three reasons -- Operation Lotus, death of sitting MLAs and election of MLAs to the Parliament.
Ten opposition MLAs were lured by the BJP; three MLAs in Maddur, Gulbarga (South) and Kadur died; and three persons -- H D Kumaraswamy, R Dhruvnarayan and Mallikarjun M Kharge -- resigned as MLAs after becoming MPs.
Through the bypolls, the BJP secured its government by increasing its tally in the assembly, while the JD(S) restored lost honour with a couple of wins. It is the Congress, which has been the loser.
