When students from diverse backgrounds come together, they throw up equally diverse challenges. And it is up to teachers to find ways to put them on an equal platform, without making anyone feel privileged or left out.
At Shishya BEML Public School, they use a multi-pronged approach to achieve this.
Sports gets a lot of importance. Starting from class I, students are put through a structured regimen that takes care of not just physical activities, but includes some academic learning too.
So while motor skills develop as they climb ladders, they also learn their numbers. Or as they run between rings, they learn colours. In the higher classes, more sporting activities are incorporated. So every child learns the basics first, such as striking the bat, or aiming for a basket and so on. Explains vice-principal S Bindu Lekha, "For the sports period too, there's a fixed curriculum with proper lesson plans. These are followed strictly."
Remedial classes are held for those not doing well. "A majority of them improve, as teachers spend time finding out what difficulties the child is facing. In cases where parents are not too well-educated, we advise them to ensure the child studies for a certain period of time every day. We show them how to check if a child is finishing work for the day," says principal Ramadevi.
From nursery to class IV, every week, one child is designated Star of the Week. The child puts up a poster with details of family, likes and dislikes, and photos. The parents spend time with the class. "It gives them a chance to speak about their child, and this makes the child feel special. When we have parents who don't know English, we let them speak in their mother tongue," says the principal. Students also get to wear a star badge.
