Summer training programmes expose students to different aspects of media

Bengaluru: Braving the heat, 120 students from different schools, eager to dwell into the world of print journalism, made the most of the Times NIE Summer Training programme held at St Joseph’s Boys’ High School, Museum Road, recently.The two-week programme familiarised the students with different facets of journalism and gave them a complete breakdown of how a newspaper works. Students got a first-hand introduction to the basics of reporting, editing, feature writing and page designing. The students then showcased their creativity, writing reports, reviews, opinion pieces and comments. Working in teams, they put together pieces based on their collective interests and packaged them into a page. They presented their pages to fellow participants, explaining different elements on them. It brought in a sense of achievement, even as a friendly competition prevailed.The workshop helped students discover their interests, skills and varied aptitude. It also kindled in them an interest to read and write. They also learned about marketing, circulation, and advertising in the print industry. They also got an opportunity to meet and interact with professionals from Times Network television broadcast team. A tour of the Times group’s state-of-the-art printing press and Radio Mirchi station added a new dimension to their learning.An engaging session on financial literacy by Canara Bank’s senior manager and faculty at Learning and Development Center, Bengaluru, Raghavendra MV, gave them a peek into the world of savings, investments, and banking as a whole. Founder and CEO of My Master’s Strokes and trainer Rachel Shibani Perinchery set up a design challenge for the participants. Regional medical superintendent at Apollo Speciality Hospitals (Bengaluru), Dr Vivek H, held a session on first aid and other health-related aspects. A virtual tour of Singapore enriched students’ experience and a travel quiz by founder of Sprouts Travel, Sushil Rai got them all excited. The prizes at the end were an added booster.On the final day, founder of the National School of Journalism and Public Discourse (NSoJ), Bengaluru, Timothy Franklyn, engaged the students in an interactive session on journalism and democracy. It provided them valuable insights into vital role of journalism in society.Each participant received a certificate on completing the training. Tata Soulful provided the participants refreshments, while ITC Classmate gave them stationery kits.
