Single and still enjoying the day

Singles celebrating Valentine's Day no longer confine themselves to homes or shy away from parties.
Single and still enjoying the day
BANGALORE: With all those heart-shaped balloons, chocolate boxes and cuddly teddy bears popping out from every corner, you would think that this one day of the year would be hard on the singletons. Then you think wrong.
Singles celebrating Valentine's Day no longer confine themselves to homes or shy away from parties. They are out there flaunting their independence which according to them gives an image that they are not only career-oriented but also smart enough not to splurge on gifts for their girlfriends.

"I am single by choice and not because I could not find myself a girl. My priority is my career before getting serious about someone else," says Srimani Sathya, a 22-year-old software professional in the city.
For the singletons, independence is too dear to be exchanged even for a partner on Valentine's Day. "Ever since I have had a girlfriend I have not been able to celebrate the day with other friends as my girlfriend expects me to spend the day only with her," said Hyder Khan (25).
"A Valentine is the one who is dear to you and for me they are my friends," he explains. "This will be my first Valentine's Day when all my four friends will get together and go to the pub," he added...

For Ian Karjon, another 23-year-old, Valentine's Day will be spent with good friends.
"I will present them gifts which has been my practice till date." In the corporate world with deadlines and monthly targets to meet, relationships have taken a backseat.

"With my kind of work pressure, even if I had a girlfriend, I would have ended up upsetting her as I am never out of office before 10 or 11 pm," says Sachin Sharma, a young software professional.
Today GenX is far more calculative and love is just a game. "I have seen my friends changing boyfriends just because one has a more brighter future than the other," says 23-year-old Swathi.
"Love has more to do with money today. It boils down to what monetary benefits your man can give you," she rues.
"I enjoy being single and celebrate Valentine's Day with my select friends by going out for dinner or simply organising a dinner, where all my five flat mates cook and eat together," she added.
