One of the most fascinating things about joining

college

is that, unlike school, you can actually get away with bunking classes. Or so one thinks, and wishes. But in most colleges, if one does not have the minimum criteria of 75% attendance, you are not allowed to sit for examinations. Compulsory

attendance

has been the most debated topic among college

students

.
So we spoke to students to find out what they think about the criteria of 75% attendance...

Learning need not be inside the four walls of the class room. For students who would want to take part in cultural and sports activities, getting the minimum required attendance becomes a hindrance. Therefore, it should not become a parameter to judge the ability of the student. Can mere physical presence guarantee the intellectual ability of the student?

Souvik Mandal, 2nd year Marketing, Symbiosis Institute of Business Managment
Attendance should not be the yardstick by which one measures the competency of students. Making attendance compulsory until a certain age makes sense, but being in a Business School, I have realized that a lot of learning happens outside the classroom by participating in co-curricular activities. I love attending those lectures, where professors have eloquent teaching skills! Learning is a choice, it can never be imposed!

Devrath Dubey, MBA +pgdm SBS, 1st year, Ramaiah Institute of Technology
According to me, attendance should not be compulsory in colleges because sometimes lectures are boring. Today, with advanced technology and accessibility to the internet, if a student has missed a lesson, they can easily catch up through online videos, which is way more interesting than sitting in class. If 75% attendance is made compulsory, students will not be able to participate in collegiate activities where they can showcase their talent.

College students are mature and grown up enough to figure out schedules for themselves. For better attendance records, it would be a better idea for colleges to motivate students by having interesting lectures, better transportation facilities and flexible timings. More so, attendance doesn’t always translate to better learning outcomes. All of these pose unnecessary difficulties for students and truly stops them from branching out and exploring different college activities.

According to me, 75% attendance should be made compulsory for students. This is because, for youngsters like ourselves, the most important thing to focus on is making a career, and getting a name for ourselves. One must enjoy life too, but not at the stake of his/her

education

, for which our parents spend their hard-earned money without even thinking twice. Therefore, I feel that 75% attendance must be made compulsory.

Attendance is not just about attending a class, it’s got to do with the fact that you learn more only when you experience something and most often, the classroom is the place where you get that. College life is about balancing various things such as studies, passions, dreams, hobbies, friends, family etc., and maintaining a certain decorum and discipline always helps to bring in balance. There is a lot that you actually learn inside a classroom. You learn to adjust, share, understand, motivate, manage time and also gain that confidence that is very much needed in every individual.

Ria Agarwal, 3rd year BBA, Jain University- CMS
We should always strike a balance in whatever we do! And the 75% attendance slab helps us maintain that. All of us have our days when we don’t feel like going to class or just want to go out for a movie with friends, and that’s completely fine! But at the end of the day, we need to keep in mind that our parents are paying a huge amount for our education. And I strongly believe that just by sitting in class and listening to what the teacher has to say, half the work is done. So yes, 75% attendance should be compulsory, but make sure you go out there and make some memories!

Advancement in technology has made textual knowledge available in plenty, but it is the teaching, experiences and personal views of professors that enables students to truly understand concepts and remember them for a long time. Even though much emphasis is being given nowadays to practical application and experiential learning, one cannot ignore the importance of classroom education, and having a minimum attendance requirement ensures that wholesome learning takes place. And 75% is a comfortable margin, giving students enough incentive to attend classes, while simultaneously making allowances for the kind of learning that happens outside a classroom.
