Shape-up time: 16 cops make it under 'lose weight, get transfer' scheme
K Annamalai, Superintendent of Police, Chikmagalur.
CHIKMAGALURU: Lose weight and get transferred to your preferred police station and get rewarded too for it - that's what the policemen of Chikmagaluru district got to hear from SP Annamalai of Chikmagalur. While fitness ought to be an obvious sine qua non for policemen, what comes to mind nowadays in the Indian context are potbellied men in uniforms. But SP Annamalai had his way of bringing in change - by offering a different kind of reward for policemen who succeed in getting back in shape. And yes, his plan is working, too.On January 13 2017, Annamalai rolled out the offer - lose 5 kg in 5 months and get a transfer to your preferred police station. The ploy worked - 34 ASIs, HCs and PCs decided to give it a try. They registered their names at the SP's office too.The men in uniform then started taking time out for exercise in all forms - walking, running, cycling, yogas and free-hand exercise as often as they could make it. But it wasn't a cakewalk. And now, the results are out. Out of the 34 policemen who tried, 16 succeeded. At the compliance test on Wednesday, the 16 policemen who made the grade were singled out. And yes, SP Annamalai was happy to reward them with their preferred place of transfer.
