MANGALORE: Parents of wards going to St Agnes Primary School were up in arms against the school management on Saturday.
They were livid following a report of the headmistress punishing Class V students of the school on Friday for talking in class, resulting in some of them fainting and falling ill.
The school head reportedly caned the children and made them stand out in the sun for over two hours.
It is learnt that some of the office-bearers of the Parents Teachers’ Association (PTA) met the headmistress Sister Mary Alice on Saturday and demanded she convene a special meeting of the PTA on Monday. The parents also demanded a commitment from the headmistress that such incidents would not recur.
Admitting most parents were not forthcoming in complaining against teachers fearing for their wards, Ronald Mendonca, an office-bearer of PTA said, the members would listen to all parents who were willing to talk prior to the meeting on Monday.
More complaints reported: Meanwhile, The Times of India office here received a number of calls from parents, teachers and the general public on the goings-on in the school.
The general secretary of the forum, Santhosh Shetty later said, the headmistress was sorry for what happened and promised such action would not be repeated. He added, PMHR would consult the PTA following the latter’s meeting on Monday, before taking further steps.
