Meanwhile, lawyers across the north-east on Monday abstained from courts and held protest meetings against the proposed transfer of two ''tainted'' judges to the Gauhati High Court.
Gauhati High Court Bar Association President Arup Borbora told PTI in Guwahati that the lawyers in the region''s seven states kept away from the courts taking out protest processions, holding rallies and meetings against the proposed move.
The bar association in Guwahati, which called for the ''protest day'', held a peaceful meeting in the premises of the high court with participants from the association, Gauhati lawyers'' association and lawyers practising in other subordinate courts and tribunals.
They were protesting against the proposed transfer of the Punjab High Court Judge Amarbir Singh Gill and Justice Gopalagowda of Karnataka.
Monday''s meeting, Borbora said, expressed its displeasure and anguish over "the move as Gauhati high court, being territorially the biggest encompassing seven sensitive states, appears to be a dumping ground".
He pointed out that a "judge who is unfit to be a judge in one high court cannot be dumped in another high court and it is not in public interest to allow a tainted judge to carry out the judicial work in any high court."
