BANGALORE: A year ago, 17-year-old Sanjana Singh was killed in a wall collapse near Mehkri Circle. Chastened by the angry public reaction, the government promised to book the culprits. But justice for Sanjana remains a mirage as all liable parties are back to leading their normal lives. The contractor, Munirathna Naidu, a corporator out on bail, is busy with BBMP council meetings; the Lokayukta report has been given a quiet burial; and the four BBMP officials who were indicted by the Lokayukta have been reinstated.
Sanjana's parents, A K Singh and Madhu Singh, feel helpless against a system that ignores their plight.
Based on their complaint, Lokayukta sleuths conducted a probe and released a report on July 12, 2010. No action has been taken though the deadline for implementing the report was three months. “Lokayukta Justice Hegde will retire in three months' time. If my daughter has to get justice, then it has to be before that as he is seized of the issue. Else I will move the HC,” said Sanjana's father.
The failure to book the culprits exposes serious flaws in the system given that three inquiry reports have been filed: a private agency Civil Aid on the quality of the wall, by BBMP's technical team and by the Lokayukta. The contractors, including Munirathna Naidu, have been indicted for faulty wall construction. But the state government is sitting on the Lokayukta report.
Sanjana's parents had emailed to the CM but in vain. “For my second mail, sent in the first week of May, I got a reply on May 11 saying that the mail has been forwarded to the officer on special duty. Nothing has happened till date,'' said Singh.
