BELLARY: The rural sports in the Hampi Utsav hooked many in the university campus and the police had a tough time controlling them. Truckful of people came from surrounding villages to watch the show. Some even climbed up the trees to get a glimpse. Bullock-cart race had pulled a huge crowd but was stopped in the middle as a couple of viewers were injured.
The two viewers had stumbled on the race path. The crowd went berserk and entered the ground breaking open the barricades.
During sand bag and boulder-lifting competitions, the situation was no better. The boulder-lifting competition was also stopped in between when a lifter sustained a minor injury. An emergency ambulance was ready to take care of any untoward incident. The wrestling sports for women was another crowdpuller. Shasi Sindhu of New Delhi defeated Vineetha of Kerala and Kerala wrestler Swathi Mole had upper hand on Kusuma of Punjab,who defeated her within a few minutes. In another category, Neha of Punjab defeated Sowmya Moule to win the first position. In the men's category, Sarovar Singh of Punjab defeated Krishna Kumar of Haryana and bagged the Hampi Kesari award. Prakash Mudhole defeated Vittal Bevinakatti and won the Hampi Yuva Kishore award. Home minister M P Prakash participated in the wrestling events. Pot-pourri will be over: The valedictory address of deputy chief minister B S Yediyurappa will put the curtains down on the three-day Hampi Utsav on Sunday night. Many new events enthralled the audience this time. The motor-ride was one of such instances. For the first time, a stage was set for the youth to showcase modern musical events in the open ground of Mayura hotel. The new Raja Rathas (horse carts) pulled by two horses lured many. But, business was a disaster in Hampi.
