On Thursday, her legal team filed a bail plea, arguing that after her arrest, she was presented before a judge on Tuesday night, but the DRI did not seek her custody at the time. Since she is a Bengaluru resident and available for investigation, her lawyers contended that she should be granted bail.
The DRI opposed the plea, emphasizing the need to investigate how Ranya procured the gold, the mode of payment, how she smuggled it, and her intended purpose for the gold. Officials highlighted her frequent travel history, stating that she had visited Dubai 27 times and over 45 countries despite having no regular profession or multiple film projects requiring such trips.
Further, investigators raised critical questions about whether she was working with a larger smuggling syndicate and stressed the potential national security risks. The prosecution urged the court to grant three-day custody starting March 9 for a deeper probe.
The DRI, seeking to unravel a possible international smuggling nexus, opposed her bail plea, emphasising national security concerns. Investigators had been tracking her movements due to her frequent international travel. The case has gained further attention due to her father’s position as a senior IPS officer.
