Gold smuggling: Ranya Rao’s father K Ramachandra Rao reappointed as DGP

BENGALURU: The state govt Monday revoked the compulsory leave order of director general of Police (DGP) K Ramachandra Rao and posted him as DGP, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement.

Rao was sent on compulsory leave on March 15, days after his daughter, actress Harshavardhini Ranya, aka Ranya Rao, was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in a gold smuggling case. The govt had not mentioned any specific reason while sending the 1993 batch officer on leave.

Ranya, caught with 14.2 kg of gold at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), has been lodged in the central prison at Parappana Agrahara. She was booked under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act.
