Ramanagara, Kanakapura set to get medical colleges
BENGALURU : Karnataka is likely to get two more government medical colleges for the next academic year at Ramanagara and Kanakapura, both less than a two-hour drive from Bengaluru, reports Sruthy Susan Ullas.
Ramanagara Institute of Medical sciences and Kanakapura Institute of Medical Sciences are proposed to have 150 seats each. While there was yet another college in Kunigal (in Tumakuru district) that was proposed on a public-private partnership model, it did not get the nod.
The move comes after the National Medical Com mission deferred its decision to limit new colleges based on population. In October, NMC had decided to cap the number of medical seats at 100 seats for every 10 lakh population.Following opposition from states, including Karnataka, NMC announced the decision is deferred till the next academic year.
NMC, in a public notice, extended its date for medical institutions to apply for increase of seats or starting new colleges to November 26.
With this, RGUHS opened the portal for new colleges to apply, with November 22 as last date. The local inquiry committee met on November 23. Meetings of the syndicate and a committee of the academic council were held on November 24. After the Essentiality Certificate and Feasibility Certificate were issued, the university sent its consent for affiliation to the government.
The government now will send the applications to NMC. "The Syndicate has approved two new colleges in the state -- one at Ramanagara and another at Kanakapura. One at Ramanagara will be on RGUHS campus," said RGUHS VC MK Ramesh.
Dr HJ Jaikrishna, syndicate member, said: "This is also a step towards the realisation of the long-cherished dream of a campus for RGUHS. The place will also develop with the medical college coming into existence."
