Primary classes in mother tongue?

Under the New Education Policy proposed by the Centre, students of classes 1 to 6 may be taught in their mother tongue. The education ministers of the southern states made a recommendation to this effect at a meeting in Bengaluru chaired by Union HRD minister Smriti Irani.

BENGALURU: Under the New Education Policy proposed by the Centre, students of classes 1 to 6 may be taught in their mother tongue. The education ministers of the southern states made a recommendation to this effect at a meeting in Bengaluru chaired by Union HRD minister Smriti Irani.
The states said there is a need to make the state language the medium of instruction till class 6, a highly placed source who attended the meeting told TOI.

Besides the southern states, some others have also submitted similar recommendations to the ministry , which is keen on considering them.
“Once the suggestion is considered and the New Edu cation Policy implemented, all school should mandatorily follow it,'' the source said.
For 21 years, Karnataka has been fighting a legal battle to implement Kannada as the medium of instruction for classes 1 to 4 in government schools. In May , the SC ruled that parents have to decide the medium of instruction for their child, and the government shouldn't have a say in it.
