Open drain next to gated community a ‘ticking bomb’

Bengaluru: Greenwood Regency, a residential society that’s home to around 2,000 people, is on a metaphorical time bomb with a five-metre-wide open drain gushing right next to the complex.Situated in close proximity to Saul Kere and RMZ Ecospace — where the infamous urban flooding took place last year — residents at this gated community are worried about the damage the upcoming monsoon could unleash if the drain is not fixed in time.“BBMP began widening the drain last September when the flooding first took place. Now, the drain is five-metre wide, though the work isn’t complete yet. Wonder why BBMP is taking so long to finish work on a stretch that’s just 150 metres long. We are worried that it will bring the entire society to its knees this monsoon,” an executive member of the residents’ welfare association (RWA) at the society said.The drain currently has a heavy flow and residents claimed that recent tests revealed presence of sewage in it.During last October’s rains, the society’s ground floor was flooded and many vehicles were damaged. With the open-drain much wider now, residents dread the damage could be far severe this monsoon if it is not fixed in time.“Sarjapur’s water drains into Saul Kere and we are at the receiving end. It needs to be fixed or the consequences will be catastrophic,” the RWA member added.
