BANGALORE: Suvarna Karnataka has made the Rajyothsava award more golden: But the number of people getting this gold will be fewer.
Even as the rush for Karnataka's prestigious award has begun, the state government has taken the twin decisions of increasing the weight of the gold coin and restricting the number of awardees, to uphold the dignity of the honour.
1x1 polls

Unlike last year, the number of awardees will not be a record 175, but just 50.
"To make the matter very clear, the point has been included in the annexure to the government order of September 8 that set up the committee to identify the awardees. The annexure clearly says the number of awards this year will be only 50, to mark the 50th year of Karnataka's unification, Suvarna Karnataka," Kannada and culture directorate officials said.
If that is disappointing for the hundreds of applicants haunting the corridors of Vidhana Soudha and Kannada Bhavana in the hope of striking gold this year at least, there is good news for those who do get the award.
Unlike their predecessors, who got small coin-sized gold medals, this year's awardees will get a good-sized one. From the 12 grams that it had got reduced to, it will be a standard 20 grams one starting this year.

"Since the award was getting smaller every year due to rising gold prices, the government has taken this decision this year. The weight of the gold medal will be fixed at 20 grams, and whatever the cost of gold is will be paid," officials said.
The 11-member committee headed by chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, to meet shortly, has the unenviable task of identifying the limited 50 awardees.
In the last three years, a whopping 345 people have been given the Rajyothsava against a mere 32 for the first three years from 1966.
Armed with recommendations from MLAs, ministers, litterateurs and eminent persons in various fields, aspirants have already submitted about 200 applications so far to the directorate of Kannada and culture, with an average of 30 coming in every day.
But this year, officials say the flood is a little less as the directorate stated that applicants will not be entertained. Officials admit this was a ploy to keep the number of applicants down.
"We will have to consider them, particularly those with recommendations. Let us see how the CM handles the pressure this year," they added.
