bangalore: checking crime at its grassroots would be more effective if, instead of rushing to the police, people themselves could keep a check on activities in their area. the motto of the ``hello neighbour'''' scheme inaugurated in udani layout. the residents of the area came together to participate in the programmeconducted by the police authorities.

dcp east, nisar ahmed said ``if every resident knows his neighbours who stayimmediately next to him, there would be no room for criminals to stay.'''' the residents brought to light many problems faced by them concerning increased traffic, stray parking in their locality, to the police authorities present there. nisar ahmed said: ``the public has apprehensions about approaching the police station. we are also a part of the society. we are coming closer to you to remove this fear''''. he requested the residents to pitch in and donate a cheetah (bike used for patrolling) to the area police station which will enable a police official to keep check over their locality in specific, day and night. this was the second area wherein the ``hello neighbour'''' programme was held. president of the resident''s welfare association, raman kumar, has acquired the aid of the police to establish barricades at the entrances of the layout, which will stop other vehicles from entering. the residents are being supplied with complete information about otherresidents and contact numbers in the police department. such schemes to beheld in many more localities will bring the police closer to theresidents.
