BENGALURU: When a Bengalurean went to GRS Fantasy Park in Mysuru with three children, he didn’t know his experience would be soured.
Upset after the three children were denied several rides citing their weight though two of them were issued adult tickets, the man approached a Mysuru consumer court and won a ticket refund and compensation.
Sumith Sreedhar, 42, a resident of Indiranagar, said that on Sept 6, 2022, he, along with his son and two nephews visited the fantasy park.
The person at the entry gate insisted that the complainant buy adult tickets for two of the three children since their height was over 4.5 feet, and he obliged.
However, Sumith said they could not enjoy various water rides together because the three children were denied permission for weighing less than 45kg. His argument that the weight-based restriction was not communicated to him at the entry point while purchasing the tickets was not heeded to by the amusement park’s manager Karthik who refunded the price of one child’s ticket amounting to Rs 750.
An upset Sumith knocked on the doors of the Mysuru district consumer disputes redressal commission, alleging deficient service. But the fantasy park said display boards were placed all round the park, mentioning rules and restrictions.
The park submitted that the complainant and the children who accompanied him were able to enjoy most of the park’s amenities. It added that certain rides have protocols about height and weight which should be adhered to for safety. The park not only called Sumith’s allegations of deficient service baseless but also stated that it would consider further legal action for the “damage” the complainant caused to their reputation.
The commission, nevertheless, found that the park had admitted its entry points lacked communication about the weight restrictions inside the park. It noted that the refund worth one child’s ticket was issued as a gesture of goodwill and that display signs mentioning the weight restrictions were later put up near the ticket-selling counters.
On Jan 29 this year, the commission ordered the fantasy park to pay Sumith Rs 2,000 towards the tickets, Rs 2,000 towards mental agony and another Rs 1,000 for his litigation expenses.
