The woman did not file a complaint with police till late Sunday night.

The injured man — Ravi Kumar from Dharwad – has been working as a cook in a hotel near Kalkere for the last couple of years. Following the complaint filed by Kumar, Bannerghatta police have secured three people.

Citing a preliminary investigation, police said the woman in her late 20s was on her way to a shop to buy milk around 10 pm when Kumar spotted her walking alone and touched her inappropriately. As she raised the alarm, a group of men hanging nearby heard her screams and caught Kumar.

As they started assaulting him, the woman left the place. The group ripped off his dhoti and hit him in the thighs and other parts of his body, thinking he had come prepared to sexually assault the woman.

When the assaulters were taking the injured man away from the place in an autorickshaw, Bannerghatta police, who learnt about the incident, rushed to the spot and rescued him. He was taken to a nearby private hospital from where he was discharged on Sunday evening.

Superintendent of police (Bengaluru district) CK Baba said, "We have secured three assaulters and efforts are on to nab others."

Another senior police officer said, "The group has been booked for assault, wrongful restraint, and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). We tried to reach out to the woman, but she refused to lodge a complaint. The assaulters have no connection to the woman. Both the assaulters and the victim were drunk."

The accused said Kumar tried to drag the woman to a corner to sexually abuse her.

Kumar had visited a liquor outlet and was heavily drunk. He was misbehaving with the woman, the senior police officer said.
