BENGALURU: A 46-year-old man attending to an injured stray dog was allegedly assaulted by his neighbour with a hammer recently at LBS Nagar in Yelahanka New Town.
The injured is Jai Shankar, a courier partner with a major e-commerce firm. According to Shankar's police complaint, his neighbour Salim, a two-wheeler mechanic, hit him on the head with a hammer around 3pm on October 23.

An unidentified vehicle had run over the stray dog around 2.30pm near Shankar's house. On hearing the dog yelping continuously, Shankar came out of his house and found the canine writhing in pain. He and his 19-year-old daughter, a PU student, attended to the dog. The daughter fed water to the animal and poured water on it as it appeared to be losing consciousness.
Meanwhile, Shankar began calling dog care centres and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike. People at a dog care centre told him they would be arriving in a while. As Shankar continued caring for the dog, Salim stepped out of his house.
Speaking to TOI, Shankar said, "Salim abused me and asked me why I was caring for the dog. I asked him what his problem was. Was it wrong to attend to the injured dog, just because it is a stray dog?"
Offended by Shankar's questions, Salim allegedly hit him on his face and chest and kicked him in the abdomen. When Shankar tried to retort, Salim brought out a hammer and hit him on the head with it. Salim also abused Shankar's daughter and his mother when they attempted to stop him. He even allegedly slapped Shankar's mother.

Meanwhile, locals intervened and sent Salim away from the spot. Shankar went to a government hospital and availed treatment. He has been advised rest for 20 days.
In the melee, dog died
"Because of the fight, I wasn't able to follow up with the dog care centre and the canine died on the spot. If Salim had not fought with me, I would have taken the dog to the veterinary hospital and might have saved it," Shankar said.
Shankar also alleged that Salim and his family were offering him Rs 5,000 to come to a compromise in the case, but he has refused to do so.
Police said a case under IPC sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 324 (causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) has been registered against Salim.
