Bengaluru: Man kills neighbour’s six-year-old daughter after fight; deboarded from train in Odisha
BENGALURU: A neighbourhood dispute over a trivial issue turned horrific when a six-year-old girl was murdered at Nallurahalli near Whitefield in east Bengaluru.
The victim, Shanaz Khatun, was the elder daughter of Inzamul Sheik, a daily-wage worker from West Bengal.
The incident came to light Tuesday night when Sheik asked Whitefield police to trace his missing daughter. Treating it as a kidnap case, police formed multiple teams and launched an intensive search involving around 40 personnel across Nallurahalli and nearby areas.
One team discovered a cloth bundle dumped in a dry drain near a temple on Nallurahalli main road. The girl's body was found inside, and her father later identified her. Preliminary investigation revealed the child had been strangled to death, with visible marks on her neck and a plastic wire found near the body. The location was within a kilometre of her house.
As investigation progressed, Sheik recalled an altercation with his neighbour, which escalated after a heated argument Tuesday morning. Police later noticed the neighbour's family was missing and his phone switched off. CCTV footage subsequently showed the child walking with the neighbour's wife Tuesday afternoon, leading police to zero in on the suspect.
On Wednesday, a police team tracked down the neighbour, his wife and minor son and deboarded them from a train at Cuttack railway station in Odisha. The suspect was produced before a court in Cuttack and he is expected to be brought to Bengaluru Thursday.
Farm worker facing police inquiry hangs himself
A 43-year-old worker, who was facing a police inquiry in the case of a missing woman, was found hanging Tuesday night at the farm where he worked in Mylapura, Hoskote. Passers-by found the victim, Y Manjunath, hanging from a tree.
Cops had summoned Manjunath for questioning on Jan 3 after a woman worker from the same farm went missing. "We called Manjunath to record his statement since he was the last person to speak to Ashwini on her mobile. He'd transferred money online to Ashwini's account, so we wanted to take his statement. Also, Manjunath had confessed he was close to the woman," a senior police officer said.
Asked whether Manjunath was harassed or threatened during interrogation, another police officer said, "We have CCTV footage showing Manjunath interacting with us. We spoke to him for an hour, recorded his statement and sent him back. We did not harass or threaten him."
