KUKANUR (KOPPAL): At a point of time when the state govt's ambitious Gruha Lakshmi scheme is hobbled with logistical issues, causing a lot of heartburn among many of the recipients who have not received their payments on time over the last couple of months, 50 out of the 100 beneficiaries from Hirebidanal village, Kukanur taluk, have opted to walk off the beaten track and contribute a month's payment towards the building of Sri Sharanabasaveshwara temple in their village.

The Gruha Lakshmi scheme guarantees a monthly payment of Rs 2,000 to each woman head of the family from a poor background.

As part of their initiative, 50 women from Hirebidanal village have started donating their payments for the month of August.

Paramma, one of the women involved, expressed her joy, saying: "We are happy that we got the ability to offer our services financially to the temple work."

Women and child welfare minister Laxmi Hebbalkar has praised the initiative.

Thrilled to see funds put to good use: Hebbalkar
This exceptional initiative piqued the interest of women and child welfare minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar. In an X post, she said: "The women of Hirebidanal village, who are contributing one month's allocation from Gruha Lakshmi Yojana towards the construction of Shri Sharanbasaveshwara temple, are indeed role models. I am thrilled to see Gruha Lakshmi funds being put to such beneficial use."

Ashok Thotad, a former zilla panchayat member, said: "Gruha Lakshmi Yojana has financially empowered ordinary women."

Following directives from Hebbalkar, the temple committee honoured these women.
