While every little heart harbours a billion dreams, only a few see them come true. Ness Technologies' ‘School adoption programme' is shaping up many such unspoken fantasies. It has given children of Doddabele Government School many a reason to smile.
The neatly painted walls of classrooms, with inspiring images sketched on them, speak volumes of the change that has come about in the school.
A set-up that was otherwise in a sorry state is today welcoming to kids, most of whom are from financially unstable families.
The project, part of the company's CSR initiative, aims to work towards educational needs of underprivileged children. Says Reanna Pereira, a core team member of the project: "Fifty employees and their families volunteered for the school-painting project that was done over three Saturdays. On the first Saturday, employees whitewashed walls, cleaned the school premises and brightened the interiors. The following two Saturdays they sketched and painted messages on the walls."
A common reason cited for dropouts in government schools, especially among girls, is inadequate toilet facility. The scene in Doddabele Government School was no better. "Toilets were in unhygienic condition. We rebuilt them and extended the walls. We also fixed tubelights and fans in the school," she says.
They also organize educational trips to places like Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium and Bannerghatta Biological Park and hold quiz competitions. Recently, the Nessians, in association with their NGO partner Peace Child organized a two-week summer camp for the students.
"Our objective was to engage these kids in constructive learning and dissuade their parents from making them part-time labourers during holidays," says Reanna. Children were trained in puppet making, clay modelling, folk dance and theatre. They were also given football coaching.
With the strong team and a good number of volunteers, the adoption programme is creating the right impact. Says Shiv Raju, math and physical education teacher: "Activity levels among kids have gone up significantly. Fewer children bunk classes now."
Adds Priyanka Ajith, another member: "We have a plan for the whole year and visit the school twice a month. The best part is that teachers are keen on learning. They often come up with requests to conduct sessions in English so that they can improve their language."
While Ness funds 99% of the project, the remaining comes from employee initiatives in the company like Christmas fete, food festival, etc. The Nessians are planning to set up a library in the school soon.
