MYSORE: Mysore and Kodagu police have rescued a child kidnapped for ransom and arrested three accused after combing nearby forests.
Mohammed Mutalif (9), son of city-based businessman Khaji Mohinuddin, was kidnapped from his residence in Narasimharaja Mohalla at 9 pm on Saturday. He was taken away in a car. The kidnappers have not harmed him.
According to police, Prajwal, Rakesh and Mohan kidnapped the child while he was returning home after evening prayers.
"Later, his father filed a missing person complaint," DCP S D Jawaharlal said. By 10.30 pm, the kidnappers contacted Mohinuddin and demanded Rs 3 crore.
The police traced the call to Maddur. However, later in the night, when Mohinuddin was contacted again, the call was made from Kadugodi in Bangalore. In another development, the police learned that the kidnappers were heading towards Madikeri and Kodagu police was alerted. The cops kept a vigil at Mysore-Kodagu border.
But the kidnappers managed to sneak through and booked a room at a hotel at Kushalnagar, 5 km from the border. The police later discovered that the kidnappers checked into the hotel at 4 am and visited Madkeri some time in the day. "When we traced the vehicle and were chasing them, they panicked near Chatnahalli and abandoned the vehicle," Kodagu SP T R Suresh said.
According to him, they nabbed one accused while the rest two escaped into the forests. "They have now been traced after a combing operation," he added. "Fortunately, they have not harmed the kid."
Of the three accused, one is believed to be a Bangalorean.
