The deceased, M Mary, was a resident of Srirampura. Her daughter M Priya has been shifted to Victoria hospital and is in critical condition, police said. Mary was self employed while Priya works with a private company. Only Mary and Priya lived in the small house as Mary's husband Manivannan had died a few years ago. On Tuesday, a few relatives had come to the house to take part in a ceremony related to Mary's brother-in-law, who had died a while ago.

Preliminary probe revealed Mary was standing near the gas stove when her sari accidentally caught fire. "It was in flames as she ran out. Before the family members could douse the fire, she succumbed. Priya, who was with Mary, too suffered injuries," police said.
