Karnataka mulls cow slaughter ban

and the sale and consumption of beef.

said .

The government will form a team of experts to look into the new law and if necessary, ask it to visit states like Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat to study their model. Twenty states have already implemented the ban effectively, he said.

Though the Yediyurappa-led

BJP government

had passed the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Protection Bill in 2010, it failed to get presidential nod. Three years later, the Bill was withdrawn by the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government which retained the 1964 Act, allowing slaughter of bulls, bullocks and buffaloes aged above 12 or which are unfit for breeding.

The BJP is likely to reintroduce the bill with minor changes now.
