KOLAR: A day after a woman gave birth to her fourth daughter, her 34-year-old husband killed himself at his house in Settyhalli, 90km from Bengaluru, at Srinivasapur taluk of Kolar district. Police suspect he took the step as he did not have a male child.

The incident came to light in the early hours of Sunday, when Lokesh's mother saw him hanging from the ceiling. Lokesh had got married to a woman from a village near Punganoor in Andhra Pradesh nine years ago.

According to social worker and Settyhalli villager Nagabhushana, when his third daughter was born three years ago, Lokesh had expressed unhappiness over not having a male child and had told some his friends that he would end his life. However, his friends advised him against this.

After Lokesh's wife conceived again, he was hoping for a male child. But after she gave birth to the fourth girl child at a hospital in Mulbagal on Friday, Lokesh was upset, Nagabhushana said.

"He had no fight with anyone in the village or any financial issue. It is suspected that he took the extreme step as he did not have a male child," Nagabhushana said.

Lokesh was alone in the house and his mother, who lives with another son in an adjacent house, served him dinner on Saturday night. "This morning, she went to his house and was shocked to find him hanging from the ceiling," a cop said.
