BENGALURU: Only a few non-Kannadigas outside Karnataka had heard of the film Kantara before its release. Today, it is a national sensation with everyone from the biggest of Bollywood directors to star Rajinikanth raving about it.

The movie stepped into its fifth week in Karnataka on Friday with the unique record that it has not been removed from any of the 170 screens it started with. The screen count now stands at 350.

Within 25 days, Kantara overtook the footfall of KGF Chapter 2, the much-hyped international hit from Sandalwood, according to Hombale Films, which has produced both the movies.

The film, not surprising given the hype surrounding it, has also managed to kick up a few controversies and debates. So pervasive is Kantara’s presence in public discourse that the state government thought it fit to mark its presence by announcing a pension for Bhoota Kola practitioners (depicted in the film) out of the blue.
