Karnataka emerge SZ U-14 champions

Bengaluru: Karnataka capped their unbeaten run in the U-14 South zone inter-state cricket tournament by winning the title at the Chicalim SAG Cricket groundin Goa on Wednesday.
In the two-day final, Karnataka skipper J Sukruth (2/75; 117) led from the front to help them to innings honours against Tamil Nadu. TN, who won the toss, compiled 363/9 in the stipulated 90 overs. Their innings was powered by RT Jishnu’s 120 and a half-centuries by Arya Ganesh (57) and Swetheesh Krishnan (91). For Karnataka, Om Agarwalla and Sukruth picked up two wickets apiece.
In reply, Karnataka finished with 366/8 in 88 overs.
The match was delicately poised with Karnataka at 82/3 but Sukruth and Arush Jain (75) took the fight to the opposition by adding 195 runs for the fourth wicket.
Sukruth — who plays for Swastic Union Cricket Club in the age-group league — scored 117 (135b, 12x4, 3x6) in 175 minutes. Lower down the order, all-rounder Athrav Deshpande scored an unbeaten 45 to seal the title.
A student at St. Joseph’s Boys High School, Sukruth finished with 455 runs from seven matches, including a century and four half-centuries, besides claiming 18 wickets with his leg-spin.
Off-spinner Athrav was the highest wicket-taker with 25 wickets.
