BENGALURU: A 33-year-old head constable attached with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) lost Rs 30,000 to a cybercriminal while trying to receive a courier recently.
Harish (name changed) from Vijayapura near Devanahalli told police that he was waiting for the courier. "Around 10.35am on May 13, I received a call from an unknown mobile number. The caller asked me to pay Rs 5 through an online link he would send in a message.

I received the link and filled the details and initiated payment of Rs 5. But I found that Rs 5,000 was deducted from my bank account in the first transaction and Rs 25,000 in the sec ond," Harish told police. According to the cops, Harish made the payment through his Google Pay account. The miscreants not only siphoned off Harish's money, but also changed his Google Pay UPI ID.
Harish approached the bank and enquired about the incident. On Tuesday h e approached Vijayapura police and filed a complaint agains t unknown miscreants.
"We have taken up a case against the suspect under IPC Section 420 and the Information Technology Act. We will investigate it with the help of our cybercrime counterparts," a police officer said.
