Conventionally, a senior minister in the council is appointed leader of the House, but since Jayamala is the only minister from the Upper House, she will become leader of the house by deafult.

Taking exception to this development, senior Congress MLCs, V S

,

and other Congress members are reportedly lobbying for a ministerial berth, claiming Jayamala will not be able to handle the task. Some are also demanding the party name a senior MLC as the leader of the House. The demands are being made at a time when the Congress is facing rising dissent within its ranks.

A senior MLC said: “We are not against the party’s decision to make her a minister, but we are objecting to party’s decision to make her the House leader since she lacks experience in the role. She has not held any position in the government earlier.”

However, Jayamala hit back at her detractors, saying she should not be judged by the colour of her skin, but by the content of her character and work.
