The parishat’s executive committee that met on Wednesday unanimously selected Venkatesh Murthy, popularly known as

, as president of the meet. Veteran writers, including Vaidehi, Sara Abubakar, GS Amur, Go Ru Channabasappa, Kum Veerabhadrappa and Veena Shanteswara, were among the other names discussed at the meeting.

Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Manu Baligar said, “His work encapsulates a wide range of literature, including poetry, plays, short stories, novels and travelogues. He was chosen as president of the sammelana owing to the universal appeal he has across the state.”

Apart from poetry, including light music songs, which are hugely popular, Murthy has penned lyrics for movies and title songs for tele series. Since the event is being held in Kalaburagi, it was expected that a writer from Kalyana Karnataka would be selected. Murthy hails from Davanagere district. The Parishat had earlier scheduled the event in December, but pushed it to February owing to bypolls.

Baligar said 1.5 lakh people are expected to take part. He said the government has agreed to grant Rs 12 crore for the event. Deputy CM Govind M Karjol, who is district in-charge minister of Kalaburagi, will be chairman of the welcome committee and oversee arrangements.
