How Bengaluru’s Vande Bharat Sleeper Rake Aims to Transform Long-Distance Travel

The second rake of the much-awaited Vande Bharat sleeper has reached Bengaluru after completing its trial run earlier this month. Its smooth arrival marks a significant step toward operational readiness and has generated fresh excitement among railway officials and enthusiasts. Authorities say preparations are underway to begin the next phase of assessment.

Manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML), the rake reflects the company’s ongoing focus on strengthening its engineering capabilities for the Vande Bharat project. BEML has incorporated advanced design features and continues to coordinate closely with railway authorities to implement improvements and refinements flagged during earlier evaluations.

Following the trial, the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the commissioner of railway safety issued several technical and safety-related correction suggestions. These observations, recorded during the inspection, are part of routine checks aimed at ensuring the rake meets all safety and performance benchmarks required for final approval.

An official from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) noted that all corrections will be carried out as directed by the railway board. ICF, which plays a central role in quality validation and technical oversight, is coordinating with other departments to ensure the rake remains aligned with national manufacturing and performance standards.

During the speed run, officials documented mechanical and control-related observations that highlighted areas requiring fine-tuning. While the rake performed well overall, the assessments underscored the need for certain adjustments before it can move toward passenger deployment. These findings now guide the modification process.

BEML sources confirmed that the second rake reached Bengaluru two days ago and will soon move to the assembly line for the recommended corrections. Engineers will carry out detailed adjustments and component testing to ensure complete compliance. Once cleared, the rake will advance to its next stage of trials.

The railway board has yet to finalise potential routes for the inaugural service of the sleeper version. Several corridors are under study based on operational feasibility, demand, and infrastructure readiness. Final route selection will be announced only after the rake secures full certification.

Officials expect the rake to be ready by the end of the year, with correction work, re-testing, and approvals progressing on schedule. Completion of the second rake is seen as an important milestone in the rollout of sleeper-class Vande Bharat trains and is likely to accelerate future production.
