Houses damaged as heavy rain lashes Mandya
MANDYA:
The intermittent downpour in the last few days across the district damaged several houses, destroyed crops and washed away many bridges.
Several houses were partially damaged in Maraliga, Besagarahalli and Gudidoddi villages in Saturday’s rain. Standing crop in hundreds of acres was submerged as several tanks were overflowing.
Lorry stuck on bridge
In Nayakanahalli village of K R Pete taluk, nearly 15 quintal of rice fell into the gushing water as a lorry got stuck on a partially damaged bridge. The lorry, which was transporting rice sacks of Anna Bhagya scheme, was dangerously leaning over the parapet wall of the bridge.
However, people from surrounding villages rushed to the spot and lifted the remaining sacks out from the lorry. Later, a crane was used to retrieve the lorry.
According to irrigation officials, Mandya district recorded 914.94 mm rainfall since October 1. On Saturday alone, the district received 106.84 mm. Meanwhile, farmers who were happy over the good rainfall are now worried as incessant rain has been hampering their normal agriculture activities.
