Honeytrap sting: Bengaluru bizman says he paid Rs 10L, gave gold and iPhone, yet videos were leaked to wife
BENGALURU: What began as an Instagram business contact spiralled into an alleged honeytrap, with a 31-year-old Jayanagar entrepreneur claiming he was forced to pay Rs 10 lakh and hand over valuables — only for his intimate videos to be sent to his wife anyway.
The man stated in his police complaint that he came across the woman in Aug 2024 while exploring promotional opportunities for his business on Instagram. The two met at a café and subsequently developed a close relationship.
The man alleged that the woman later began demanding Rs 1.5 crore, claiming she had recorded their private conversations and intimate moments. She threatened to share them with his wife and other family members.
The man claimed he paid her Rs 10 lakh and also handed over valuables (inlcuding gold and an iPhone) worth Rs 2.5 lakh, but she not only continued to demand more money but also shared the private content with his wife.
Police said they have registered a case under BNS Section 308 (extortion) and IT Act Sections 66E (punishment for violation of privacy) and 67 (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form). "We are yet to trace the accused. Once we have her in custody, her devices will be sent for data retrieval," a police officer said.
