Harshaali, daughter of police constable Lokeshappa, fell into the burning garbage pile on March 5 and died in Victoria Hospital on March 13.

“We have taken the incident very seriously and I’ve asked the DGP for a report. We want to find out who’s responsible,” said Patil.

On the issue of poor infrastructure at police quarters across the state, Pail said the government is planning to improve facilities, including water supply and a healthy environment. He refused to spell out the details due to the model code of conduct being in place.

Sources in the police department said plans are afoot to demolish old buildings and construct new seven-storey structures with elevators. Patil said he had sought Rs 200 crore from the government to revamp police quarters and his department had received Rs 20 crore so far.
