BANGALORE: "Hang the Rapist", "He deserves the most severe punishment". Cries like this rent the air as employees of various BPOs held a protest near the Gandhi Statue on M G Road to condemn the rape and murder of 24-year old Hewlett Packard BPO employee Prathibha Srikanth Murthy. They also demanded increased safety norms for employees. Not many BPO executives turned out though for the protest.
The reason? Most of them didn't know about it till 2 pm on Saturday. Because, after getting home around 2.30 am or 3 am, they sleep through till 1 pm or 2 pm. So, it took a while for them to read newspapers or watch TV news.
"But it's just a beginning. Soon we will come out in thousands and protest till the rapist- murderer is hanged," said Santosh K J, an employee who works with Siemens BPO. ISEVA employee, Shridhar is of strong opinion that the police and the BPOs are equally responsible for the security of the employees. "The police should patrol the lonely areas during night. Besides, the cab drivers should be scanned by the security department of the organisation," he added. ......An employee of Wipro, who does not want to be identified said, "One of my colleagues was forced to stay back in the office for late hours by her manager just because he wanted her to complete eight hours of duty.I feel the company should be sensitive towards the work timings of the female employees." She also suggested that employees should be trained in selfdefence classes by the companies. "If they can have gymnasiums, posh food courts all for the employees, why not do something for the security of their employees as well?" she asks. Ocwein Financial employee Nawaz Moinuddin, who is a colleague of Pavan, the husband of Prathibha said, "In the past seven months of my service, I have had four cab drivers. ......Since we do not know Kannada we have a tough time communicating with the drivers even though we want to check his authenticity," he added. Vanguard Securities employee Pradeep Kumar, whose shift gets over at 1 am said that since it is impossible for the police to be every where, the employees should cooperate among themselves.
