BANGALORE: Water Resources Minister H.K. Patil is among the Congress candidates shortlisted for the four Legislative Council seats -- two each from graduates' and teachers' constituencies -- which are set to fall vacant in June, 2002.

bangalore: water resources minister h.k. patil is among the congress candidates shortlisted for the four legislative council seats -- two each from graduates'' and teachers'' constituencies -- which are set to fall vacant in june, 2002. karnataka pradesh congress committee president allum veerabhadrappa told reporters here on monday, patil has been chosen to represent the graduates'' constituency of hubli-dharwad, uttara kannada, haveri and gadag districts.

basavaraj patil, a doctor by profession and vice-chairman of indian medical council, has been chosen to represent the bidar, gulbarga, raichur, bellary and koppal teachers` constituency. social worker a. deve gowda has been selected to contest from the bangalore south teachers'' constituency. "we have put off the selection of the candidate for davanagere, chitradurga, tumkur and kolar district graduate constituency as there is a lot of competition," veerabhadrappa said. the candidate will be shortlisted in a couple of days. while h.k. patil is seeking a re-election, basavaraj patil will contest the seat held by bjp member sushil namoshi. gowda is contesting the seat held by bjp candidate k. narahari. protests: veerabhadrappa said the party will stage protests in all districts for a day against the bjp''s adamant attitude in not replacing the modi government in gujarat. "the party also condemns the bjp for reportedly distributing pamphlets against minorities," he added. on the eve of completing one year in office, veerabhadrappa thanked the party workers for cooperating with him during his tenure. when asked which of the positions -- the party president or the minister -- provided maximum satisfaction, he said he enjoyed working in both positions. "for a good worker, any position is good," he added.
