BANGALORE: The hiring market is definitely in recovery mode, as evident from the recently-concluded summer placements of the Indian Institute of Management - Bangalore (IIM-B).
Vineet Sharma, placement representative, IIM-B, said the institute created a record when 180 students from a batch of 348 were placed in Slot Zero (the first two days) itself.
1x1 polls
It's quite a jump from last year's 121 of 270 students. On these days, investment banking firms were the highest recruiters with 37%, followed by consulting (20%), finance (18%), general management (8%), sales & marketing and private equity at 6% each and others 5%.
Interestingly, Goldman Sachs doubled its offers by almost 100%, making 13 offers. Other well-known recruiters are Merrill Lynch (4), Morgan Stanley (4) and JP Morgan (3). First-timers like Nomura bagged 6.
Vineet Sharma said this year there were more recruiters from the FMCG sector too. These include Samsonite, St Gobain, Wipro Consumer, Heinz among others. Only one student opted out as he already has his own start-up. From the public sector, five offers came from Bharat Petroleum and SEBI.
According to Sapna Agarwal, Head, Career Development Services, IIM-B, from last year's summer placements, 40 have translated into pre-placement offers (PPO) and 10 into pre-placement interviews (PPI). Talking about this year's placements, Agarwal said: "Placing 180 students in two days is a mammoth task. In the five-day recruitment, we were at it from 9 am till late into the night. We expected it to be tougher this year because of number of students has increased. But our apprehensions were allayed on the first day itself. All the students got what they wanted.''

19% (64 students including 15 women) have been placed abroad, mostly in Asia. This number is the highest among all IIMs this year.Summer placement is conducted for first-year students to do internships for 8-10 weeks beginning April till May-end or early June.
