bangalore: starting may, india will conduct further trials on `brahmos', the supersonic cruise missile being jointly developed by india and russia, scientific adviser to the defence minister dr v k aatre said. he was in bangalore on tuesday to deliver the air marshal subroto mukherjee memorial oration 2002 at the institute of aerospace medicine. the success of the first flight of the supersonic missile last year had proven that the system works, aatre said.
on being asked when the missile would be inducted into the armed forces, he said: ``one flight (of the missile) has shown the system works. unless a few more flights are made, i cannot say we have achieved a mature stage.'' after the tests in may, they could declare when the missile would go in for production, he said. the first flight test of `brahmos' was conducted on june 12, 2001, at the chandipur interim test range in orissa. the missile can be launched from multiple platforms based on land, sea, sub-sea and air. developed jointly by india and russia, the missile incorporates the most advanced technologies and will be inducted by the russian and indian forces simultaneously, within two years. the missile uses propulsion system from russia and indian expertise as part of the indo-russian joint venture company brahmos, which was set up in february 1999.
