It is ridiculous to burden lakhs of Bangaloreans for lapses by the government in allowing illegal ration cards and LPG connections to flourish... how are they going to sort out five crore papers that the public submit to them, and identify illegal connections? Why don't they go to the root of the problem and crack down on the mafia, instead of asking every citizen to pay for their mistakes?
These are some of the questions consumers are asking the government, on the move by the food and civil supplies department to ask every LPG connection holder to submit details of their gas connection by February 10.

"This process will in no way help control illegal connections. The department is not clear how they will go about identifying the illegal connections. Once the consumer submits the documents, will they do a door-to-door check? How else will they know?'' asked Somasekhar VK, managing trustee, Grahaka Shakthi.
But G V Bhushan Narang, chairman, Bangalore Petroleum Dealers' Association, is optimistic. "It is a positive step to weed out illegal connections and bogus cards. However, there are a few lacunae that need to be corrected. The practicality of checking the authentic customers has to be strengthened. We have a very poor inspector-customer ratio, to check the illegal connections.''
