BENGALURU:
Adi Narayana Naidu
, grandson of late former MP
DK Adikesavulu Naidu
, was arrested on Monday for allegedly ramming a sleeping street dog with an Audi car on 10th B Main, I Block,
Jayanagar
, last week.
CCTV footage from the evening of January 26 showed a white Audi car (KA-51-ME-0045) deliberately hitting a street dog. In the footage, the driver can be seen reversing the vehicle, adjusting the left tyre and then hitting the accelerator to slam into the dog. The video went viral on social media, drawing huge flak. The footage was so disturbing that many tweeted they couldn't watch it for the second time. Several residents from Jayanagar made futile attempts to trace the wounded dog, hoping to hospitalise it.
Soon, animal lovers filed a complaint with the jurisdictional Siddapura police station and cops launched a manhunt for the driver.
"We tried to trace the dog to take it to the veterinary hospital and searched in many places, but in vain. The video showed the driver's intention. A few stray dogs were sleeping on the street and he intentionally ran over one of them. What did these poor dogs do to him? We filed a complaint against the person," said Badri Prasad MS, a resident of Jayanagar. Police too had no idea if the dog had survived.
Sensing that police were on his trail, Narayana Naidu (in pic), a resident of Jayanagar, had been allegedly evading cops since a complaint was filed on Friday. Police traced him to the family's farmhouse in Kaggalipura. Police sources said they had to chase his vehicle before blocking it near the farmhouse entrance.
The 26-year-old was arrested under IPC sections 428 (mischief by killing or maiming animal of the value of ten rupees) and 506 (criminal intimidation) and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Later in the day, he was released on station bail. Confirming the arrest, DCP (south) Harish Pandey said they will take a bond from the accused under CrPC 107 (security for keeping peace in other cases).
"We have called him on Tuesday to complete bond formalities. When a person signs the bond under CrPC 107, s/he has to refrain from anti-social activities. The bond is for 10 months. If it is breached, the person is sent to judicial custody and remains without bail for 10 months," he explained.
