doweshowbellyad=0; Not too yum (TOI Photo)Cafe Masala occupies the terrace of Eva Mall If you are likely to order Veg Jalfrezi when you find it on a menu, truly appreciate the VFM aspect of a 199-rupee lunch buffet and like Bryan Adams, then here’s the place.Cafe Masala occupies the terrace of Eva Mall, sporting a bright, brasserie-like air. There’s an open section where skylights let plenty of sunshine stream in during the day.
Also, indoors for those who can’t eat without a/c.
It’s an all-day diner, but the big draw here is the eat-all-you-want lunch. The spread takes in everything from salads, to kebabs, curries, Conti-style bakes, noodles and dessert. I sampled the buffet on a Sunday afternoon when the place was simply teeming children, families, a 20-plus table of teens all talking at the same time. Noise levels were so high you could hardly hear ‘Please Forgive Me...’ I could see it’s a popular notion of Sunday fun.As for the food, the restaurateurs insist it’s just casual fare with no pretensions to being anything else. I found the salads whether the Mixed Lentil, the Beetroot or the Avocado lacking in zest and the Pizza limp. The Tandoori Chicken was perfectly good though. And so was the Mutton Biryani. All those white-sauced vegetables and noodles in chafing dishes didn’t seem terribly appealing, but it’s certainly lots of food at a reasonable price. For dessert there was a chocolate fountain which seemed quite a hit with the kiddies; the rest was mainly mousse-type things in various flavours.I did, on another occasion, get a taste of the a la carte menu. From 4 pm onwards you can order sandwiches and snacks, like Minced Meat Chops and Jalapeno Cheese Fritters. Which makes Cafe Masala a nice place for hanging out in those in-between hours and offering a welcome change from the jaded flavours of our coffee chains. As for the dinner menu, there are the North Indian restaurant staples an excellent Boti Kebab, perfectly palatable Fish Tikka Masala, and then Veg Spinach Masala, Vegetable Makhni and, of course, Vegetable Jalfrezi some of which sort of run into one another. Also some pasta. For dessert, there’s a range of sundaes with various combinations of chocolate syrup, chocolate ice-cream and cream.A la carte meals at Cafe Masala would cost about Rs 700 for two; a snack and coffee Rs 300 for two.
