Meet me at CCD” has been the starting point of many conversations and relationships for over two decades now, be it among lovers looking for a private corner, young men and women checking out potential spouses or simply college students in search of free Wi-Fi and lounging space, no questions asked.
As Siddhartha’s death was confirmed on Wednesday, emotional tributes flooded Twitter and other platforms from hundreds of strangers, all of whom had just one bond with the CCD founder – a cup of coffee over which something happened in their lives.
Cricketer R Ashwin was among them, as he tweeted his “first memories of going out with friends and having a cup of coffee”. Antara Sharma, 24, fondly recalled a treat from her sister at a CCD in 2011 on getting her first salary: “I still remember I had a brownie with icecream and a latte.”
Renuka and her husband of 12 years, Govind Krishna, found love over countless cups of coffee. Their first date was at a CCD and it was at another CCD that they planned their wedding in 2016.
For Bengaluru’s bikers and cyclists, CCDs are key route points of rejuvenation. Akshaya Kashyap, an independent biker, said, “Biking long distances is never a worry because we know there’s a CCD every 100km.” Sanjana Reddy hastened to add, “Clean toilets used to be an issue earlier but CCD restrooms are on a par with those at five-star hotels.”
