BENGALURU: Southwest monsoon, which was earlier expected to arrive in Karnataka in the first week of June, is now likely to set in at least four days early.
According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the onset of monsoon was projected for May 31 in Kerala and for June 3 or 4 in Karnataka. The new projections show it could hit Karnataka as early as May 31 or June 1 because of cyclone Yaas, it added.
Cyclone Yaas live updatesS S M Gavaskar, junior scientific officer from KSNDMC, said, “Once the monsoon sets in, we can predict how it will advance further. It could be weak, active or sometimes vigorous.” Monsoon ideally lasts from June to September and experts are predicting normal to above-normal rainfall this season. Gavaskar also pointed out that this year the state has received more rainfall during the pre-monsoon season. He also said, “Coastal Karnataka and north-interior Karnataka are likely to experience above- normal rainfall this year whereas south-interior Karnataka is likely to receive normal amount of rainfall.”
Unlike pre-monsoon showers, monsoon rain will not be accompanied by thunder and lightning.
The Met department, however, is not sure of the impact Yaas will have on monsoon. Director of Indian Meteorological Department CS Patil said, “There will be thunder showers only until monsoon completely sets in.”
Patil added: “The windspeed will increase over the next few months. However, the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 30 and 20 degrees Celsius.”
