CRPF tracker dog from Karnataka sniffs her way to national glory

Bengaluru: A five-year-old Belgian Malinois trained in Bengaluru wagged its tail in delight as it won top honours on the national stage.K9 Babi, trained at CRPF's Dog Breeding and Training School (DBTS) in the city, emerged as the best canine at All-India Police Duty Meet 2025–26, held this weekend in Nagpur. Competing against more than 100 dogs from 29 teams representing state police and paramilitary forces, Babi also secured first position in the tracker dog category. Bred and raised in Bengaluru, Babi showed early promise that was honed through structured training at DBTS. Officials said her win is the result of consistent training, real-world exposure and precise handling.Her skills were not just built in training grounds. Babi proved her mettle in the challenging terrain of Bijapur in Chhattisgarh, a Naxal-affected region, where she was deployed on active duty. Working under constant pressure, she delivered with consistency, earning her the reputation of a dependable and no-nonsense performer.Recognising her potential, CRPF brought her back to Bengaluru in 2023 to fine-tune her skills for competition. The focus was on sharpening precision, control and repeat performance — qualities that ultimately set her apart at the national meet. Equally crucial to her success was her strong bond with handler Basavaraj. Their coordination, timing and trust translated into flawless performances during the event. Adding to the celebration, CRPF's K9 unit trained in Bengaluru bagged the team championship trophy. K9 Stoney was named second-best narcotics detection dog, while Babi, Viggy, Stoney and Greta picked up multiple gold medals across categories like tracking, explosive detection and narcotics search.
