BENGALURU: The Congress central leadership on Tuesday deputed the party’s Karnataka chief D K Shivakumar as its special observer in Goa, along with two others, ahead of the results on Thursday.

Party functionaries said Shivakumar will camp in Goa until the new government is formed there. “We will prove all exit poll predictions wrong. Congress will lead in Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Goa. Our party will come to power with a majority in Goa,” Shivakumar told reporters in Bengaluru before leaving for Goa.

When the 2017 Goa assembly elections threw a fractured verdict, the party missed a chance to form the government by a whisker. A senior leader close to Shivakumar said the leader will put in efforts to install a Congress government in Goa to impress the high command.

Shivakumar, the go-to man in Congress party, had played a key role in installing the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in Karnataka in 2018, despite BJP emerging as the single-largest party in the assembly elections. He had hosted Congress MLAs in a resort, much to the chagrin of the BJP.
