Colours not only ease stress but also energise and elicit happiness. This was evident on a cloudy Saturday morning as 600 students from over 200 schools gave wings to their creativity with a splash of colours.

Participating in the Times NIE Colour Splash painting competition, held in association with Jockey Juniors at Delhi Public School- Bangalore North, they depicted their interpretation of an imaginary, dream world as they picked one of two topics - 'My Imaginary World' and 'Dream Destination'.

While the children painted, a special workshop was held for the accompanying parents. Conducted by Kalpari Art and Mind director, counselling psychologist and art therapist Divya Kumawat, the workshop on 'Positive Parenting' touched on issues such as teenage behaviour, transition from dependence to independence, sibling rivalry, and styles of parenting. "The tech-savvy, alpha generation is very sensitive, had low attention span, lacks social skills, and is averse to adhering to cultural value systems. It is important for parents to be straightforward and acknowledge the child's emotions. Yet, it is important to discipline a child and not give in to tantrums," Dr Kumawat said.

DPS North vice-principal Geetha Kandaraji encouraged children to use the medium to give expression to their imagination without any inhibitions. The judges for the painting competition were well-known artists Gurudas Shenoy, Venugopal VG, and AM Prakash.

Shenoy urged the students to continue pursuing their hobbies, irrespective of whether they won prizes, and emphasized that creativity must be nurtured.

Karthik Yathindra, chief marketing officer at Jockey, gave away the prizes.
