Bengaluru: Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai handed over a cash award of Rs 5 lakh to World No. 9 badminton player Lakshya Sen, who was part of the Indian men’s team that won the

Speaking to TOI, Lakshya said

encouraged him to do better. “It was a big honour to be felicitated by the state government,” he added.
Lakshya said the victory against Indonesia in the Thomas Cup final was special. “At the beginning of the tournament, I was struggling owing to food poisoning. But I am happy I could come back and contribute to the cause by winning my match in the final,” he added.
Lakshya will now travel to Indonesia and Malaysia for tournaments before heading to Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games.
Bommai also felicitated Lakshya’s father DK Sen and coach U Vimal Kumar at his office-residence Krishna. Sports minister C Narayana Gowda and Karnataka Olympic Association president K Govindaraj were also present.
Vimal said the chief minister extended all possible support to Lakshya to excel in the sport. Bommai also revealed that he was beaten by Vimal during the 1980 All India inter-varsity badminton tournament. “After that defeat, I stopped playing badminton,” the CM was quoted by Vimal as saying. Bommai represented Dharwad University while Vimal was part of University of Kerala.
Meanwhile, speaking to TOI, Assam chief minister and Badminton Association of India (BAI) president Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is on a visit to the city, termed the Thomas Cup triumph as a watershed moment in Indian badminton history. “It is a great victory. We are very happy with this result, and this would also make badminton more popular among the people. We are looking forward to a brighter future,” he added.
