MYSURU: Well known classical vocalist Shyamala G Bhave (79), who was performing both in Carnatic and Hindustani music and which brought her the fame Ubhayagana Vidhushi (expert in both styles), passed away on Friday at 7.15am in Bengaluru.
Born on March 14, 1941 in Bengaluru, she is from a family of artists. Her father late Govind Vittal Bhave was an expert in playing 14 instruments. Her mother Lakshmi Bhave was also a classical vocalist. She started her music education when she was just three-year-old. At the age of 6, she participated and won first prize in a music competition. She gave her first music performance when she was just 12-year-old.
She learnt carnatic vocal from B Doreswamy and A Subbaraya while Hindustani music from her parents. Bharata Ratna sir M Visvesvaraya called her as the Ubhayagana Vidhushi after listening to her vocal performances in both the styles. She composed music for songs in 9 languages including Hindi and Sanskrit. She is also the recipient of Karnataka Rajyotsava award.
